Target Practice in the Living Room
How many people have discharged a firearm in their own home, just for a little target practice? Hopefully not too many, as it is hardly considered safe for the shooter, family members, or even the neighbor. Yet indoor residential shooting isn’t exactly an insane desire. In the 19th century special “parlor” pistols were made for the purpose of casual indoor plinking. And in our modern busy world, many shooting enthusiasts struggle to find the time to load up their gear and travel to a place to do some target practice. We’ve stumbled across a company called N Range Systems that offers people a way to shoot their own firearms, safely, within the home.
If you live out in the country and enjoy shooting in your own backyard, then the N Range System is probably not for you. But how about shooting enthusiasts living in areas where they haven’t a convenient place to do regular plinking? Here’s where the N Range Indoor Shooting Systems may be of interest. However, this should not be considered an inexpensive solution. The special equipment including target box with collector, and firearms conversion kit will certainly be an upfront cost. The system also works with special low energy ammunition, each shell containing a complex inner system. You can bet that the ammunition also comes at a premium.
N Range Indoor Shooting System for homes and offices appears to be unique in their offering, there doesn’t seem to be anything else like it on the market. Although little has been written about the company, they are listed on the NRA website under Range Products and Services.
The price of the shooting system, which is a complete kit, starts at $1,304.00.

For the executive shooting system the price is $3,554.00, which includes a solid wood cabinet, as seen in the picture.

Also, 100 rounds of the special ammunition starts at around $66.00. Current pricing is available as well as the option to purchase directly from the N Range Systems online store.
Many cities, such as the one that one of our site authors lives in, no longer has any public indoor ranges available. Often, this is due to lawsuits as the result of carelessness related injury and the anti-firearms political climate during the Clinton years. Maybe shooting at home, with the N Range Indoor Shooting System is the answer for small gun clubs.
How about safety?
According to their FAQ: “Because of our lightweight projectile and its low velocity the N Range ammunition has an extremely low muzzle energy, 3ft lbs (Less than most BB guns) The N Range projectile is made of aluminum rather than lead, eliminating the led exposure. We do not use the standard powder charge in our ammunition, thus eliminating the harmful fumes, and loud noise.”
Keep in mind that although N Range advertises the system as safe for indoor shooting, it may not be legal in your area to use the system. Many municipalities strictly regulate any projectile system, from slingshots, BB guns, to regular firearms.
What guns does the system support?
First off, no revolvers are currently supported by their system. This pretty much eliminates the Cowboy Action Shooting handguns. According to their web site, the following firearms are supported:
- Beretta 92 9mm
- Browning HP 9mm
- Glock 17 9mm
- HK USP 9mm and HK USP Compact 9mm
- Sig 220 9mm
- Sig 226 9mm and Sig 228 9mm
- Sig 229. 9mm
- AR-15. .223/5.56mm
Most common questions are addressed on the N Range Systems FAQ page. They also have a guided tour of the N Range System with an optional video tour for you to check out.
In our final analysis, we found their offering quite interesting, however, we have not used nor have we tested it ourselves. Many will likely find the ammunition cost inhibitive, but perhaps pricing will do less damage than we suspect.
Ultimately, the success of the product depends on a lot more than strictly sales. It only takes one serious injury as the result of misuse, along with anti-gun fanatics such as the Brady Campaign, to put the legal clamp on the N Systems product. Also, it isn’t recommended that customers advertise what they are doing to their next door neighbor.

We wish the company and their product great success. They seem to provide both a convenient and practical means for those with limited time and places to shoot a way to keep their shooting skills honed.
